Bionicle: Matoran Adventures

A licensed side-scrolling platformer that mixes adventure with simple action, light puzzle-solving, and character swapping across the six world regions.

Description

Bionicle: Matoran Adventures is based on LEGO’s Bionicle line, set on the island of Mata Nui during an invasion by mechanical insect-like enemies called the Bohrok. Rather than focusing on the main heroic figures from the toy line, the game follows the smaller village characters as they travel through elemental regions, rescue elders, and push back the threat.

The game is a side-scrolling action-platformer with light puzzle elements. Each stage is themed around a different part of the island: jungle, desert, volcano, ice, water, and underground areas; giving the adventure a tour-like structure through the Bionicle world. Progress mostly involves jumping across platforms, throwing discs at enemies, finding level-specific items, and reaching the exit, with boss fights appearing at key points. Its main mechanical idea is switching between two characters. The Matoran character is more mobile, able to jump higher and attack with thrown discs, while the Turaga companion is slower but can activate switches, break obstacles, and use elemental powers. This gives the game a simple cooperative-puzzle feel, even though it is single-player, because the player needs both characters’ abilities to move through the levels.

The game is still fairly short and straightforward, but the character-switching system gives it more identity than a completely generic licensed platformer. As a GBA Bionicle game, it sits between fan-service and basic handheld platforming. Players who were familiar with the toy line got recognisable locations, characters, and story elements, while everyone else mainly get a simple 2D platformer with puzzle-lite character swapping. It is not especially ambitious, but it does a reasonable job turning Bionicle’s elemental world into a compact handheld adventure.
