Tottoko Hamtaro: Tomodachi Daisakusen Dechu
とっとこハム太郎The first game based upon the Hamtaro anime. Rather than an adventure game, it functions as a fortune‑telling and personality simulation.
Description
Tottoko Hamtaro: Tomodachi Daisakusen Dechu (Tottoko Hamtaro: Operation Friend) sees Hamtaro and his Ham‑Ham friends guide fortune‑telling sessions and compatibility checks. Rather than a traditional adventure, the title provides playful interactions, with the characters acting as interpreters of the player’s input. Through entering personal details such as birth dates or preferences, the game generates fortunes, personality profiles, and compatibility results. It employs the Game Boy Color’s real‑time clock for occasional interactions. The console’s infrared connectivity is engaged, allowing players to exchange fortunes and interact socially.
The title’s tone mirrors the anime’s gentle humour and warmth, positioning the Ham‑Hams as companions in everyday life. It is notable the Ham-Hams differ slightly to the anime, possibly reflecting the development occurring prior to the anime’s production.
Unlike subsequent Hamtaro titles, this one was not released outside Japan. It sold over 340,000 copies, placing it within the top 10 Game Boy Color titles by sales. The title appealed to younger audiences, while its use of hardware features was novel. Its alignment with the anime’s popularity also contributed. The title’s format would later become the foundation for Tomodachi. Though unconventional as a game, it was celebrated as a cultural success and a key part of Hamtaro’s multimedia expansion.
