A 3D rail shooter where players pilot the Arwing and other vehicles through branching missions to stop Andross from conquering the Lylat System. Star Fox 64 introduced the Rumble Pak, featured extensive voice acting, and offered both single‑player campaigns and four‑player multiplayer battles.
Description
Star Fox 64 reimagines the story of Fox McCloud and his Star Fox team, as they defend Corneria and the wider Lylat System from the villain Andross. It was the second game in the series after Star Fox 2 was cancelled, although it was later released in 2017 on the Super NES Classic Mini. Gameplay is divided into two main styles. Most missions use “Corridor Mode,” where the Arwing follows a fixed forward path while players dodge obstacles, shoot enemies, and collect power‑ups. Some stages switch to “All‑Range Mode,” giving players full 3D movement within an arena, often for boss fights or dogfights against rival mercenaries like Star Wolf. Vehicles include the Arwing fighter, the Landmaster tank, and the Blue Marine submarine, each with unique mechanics.
The game is famous for its branching mission structure. Depending on performance and hidden triggers, players can take different routes through the Lylat System, leading to multiple paths and endings. This design encourages replayability, as mastering advanced maneuvers like somersaults, U‑turns, and the iconic “barrel roll” unlocks harder routes. The game also featured extensive voice acting, with memorable lines that became part of gaming culture.
Multiplayer allowed up to four players to battle in arenas using Arwings, Landmasters, or on foot. While simple compared to modern standards, it added replay value and showcased the N64’s local multiplayer strengths. Star Fox 64 was the first Nintendo 64 game to support the Rumble Pak, bundled with the game at launch. This accessory provided haptic feedback, enhancing immersion and setting a standard for future controllers.
Star Fox 64 was praised for its precise controls, cinematic presentation, and replay value. It sold over four million copies worldwide, making it the best‑selling entry in the series. It has since been re‑released on the Wii Virtual Console, Wii U eShop, Nintendo Switch Online, and remade as Star Fox 64 3D for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011.
