A fishing simulation that is an expanded and enhanced version of the 1997 Super Famicom title Itoi Shigesato no Bass Tsuri No. 1, originally created by copywriter and Mother/EarthBound series author Shigesato Itoi.
Description
Itoi Shigesato’s Bass Fishing No. 1 Definitive Edition! is set on the fictional Akahoshi Lake (赤星湖, “Red Star Lake”), the game casts the player as Itoi himself, competing in bass fishing tournaments organised by the Bass Angler’s Club (BAC). The goal is to catch the largest and most impressive fish, with the ultimate prize being the elusive 80cm‑plus bass.
The “Definitive Edition” refined mechanics from the Super Famicom and Satellaview versions, added new difficulty settings, and broadened the scope of tournaments. It retained Itoi’s personal, reflective design philosophy: fishing as both a pastime and a test of patience, where luck and knowledge intertwine.
Gameplay combines casual accessibility with simulation depth. Players must consider time of day, weather conditions, and lure selection to succeed. The N64 version introduced full 3D graphics, a village hub to explore, and expanded tournament structures. NPCs, including quirky animal characters, provide tips and flavour, giving the game a whimsical, almost Animal Crossing‑like tone.
For the full experience, you also had to have the ASCII’s fishing controller, the Tsuricon 64 (literally “Fishing Controller 64”), a controller specific for this game.
Though never released outside Japan, the game is remembered as a cult curiosity — a blend of Itoi’s literary sensibility, HAL’s technical polish, and Nintendo’s willingness to publish idiosyncratic projects. It remains notable as one of the few N64 titles to feature a celebrity creator as the in‑game protagonist.
