A life‑simulation game that lets players speak directly to Pikachu using ground breaking voice recognition hardware.
Description
Pikachū Genki Dechū, known as “Hey you, Pickachu!” in North America, is a social simulation game where you befriend Pikachu and interact with it through voice commands. You guide Pickahu through daily activities like exploring forests, fishing, or playing mini‑games. Your goal is to keep Pikachu happy, which unlocks new areas and events.
The game relies on the Voice Recognition System (VRS) hardware, which consists primarily of the microphone and processing unit which handles a limited range of speech recognition, the outcomes of are transferred through a N64 controller port. The system lets players speak directly to Pikachu using around 200 recognised words and phrases.
The Japanese title is a pun on “Pikachu genki desu” (Pikachu is fine/energetic), reflecting its lighthearted, child‑friendly tone. The title is a relatively simple game concept that emphasises an alternate, experimental interaction method. Quite cool for its time.
The voice control is a core element and the Mic and VRS is required. The whole kit comes in a large box, including the game in its own regular sized box inside. Curiously that box has the barcode 4902370503968 on it, which is quite unusual since the game wasn’t sold separately and Nintendo otherwise does not provide barcodes on games that are part of a set.
