Dōbutsu no Mori+

An enhanced port of the late N64 life simulator. This version was the first to be released to western audiences under the brand “Animal Crossing”.

Description

Dōbutsu no Mori+ (Animal Forest +) is an expanded release of the N64 game Dōbutsu no Mori, released in the first few months of the GameCube. Building on the Nintendo 64 version, it introduced a richer seasonal calendar, new villagers, and a host of Japan-specific holidays and events that gave each in-game month its own personality. Players could take part in celebrations like the Bean Throwing Festival or Cherry Blossom Viewing, decorate their homes with new furniture sets, and discover fresh dialogue quirks from the expanded cast. The game also refined visuals and sound for the more powerful hardware, making the village feel warmer and more alive while keeping the laid-back, real-time life simulation at its heart.

What makes Doubutsu no Mori+ especially fascinating today is how it served as a bridge between the N64 original and the international Animal Crossing release. Many of its additions, like expanded museum exhibits, new collectibles, and extra mini-events, would later be adapted or reworked for the Western audience, while some features, such as certain festivals and region-specific items, remained unique to this version. Despite now being on optical disc, the game remained very much N64 cartridge size, making it quite a small game for the GameCube.

In Animal Forest you could furnish your house with Famicom games, which could be obtained through in-game means like Tom Nook’s lottery or Crazy Redd’s shop. These were fully playable games within the game itself. The original N64 version had seven Famicom games and no FDS titles:

  • Balloon Fight (バルーンファイト)
  • Kuru Kuru (Clu Clu) Land (クルクルランド) [FDS – N64 had FC version]
  • Donkey Kong (ドンキーコング)
  • Donkey Kong Jr. (ドンキーコングJR.)

In this version, twelve Famicom titles were added, including two FDS games, many of which were restricted or limited:

  • Baseball (ベースボール)
  • Donkey Kong 3 (ドンキーコング3)
  • Gomoku Narabe (五目並べ)
  • Ice Climber (アイスクライマー)
  • The Legend of Zelda (ゼルダの伝説) [FDS]
  • Mahjong (麻雀)
  • Punch‑Out!! — Mr. Dream version
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Wario’s Woods (ワリオの森)

The game was received warmly as a timely and more feature‑rich follow‑up to the original N64 release. Launching on December 14, 2001 — just eight months after Doubutsu no Mori — it benefited from the GameCube’s stronger hardware and the novelty of its expanded content, selling 92,000 in the first week – quite solid for an enhanced port! Over time the game continued to sell through word-of-mouth, the various seasonal events, and the relaxed open-ended gameplay it offered.
