NARUTO: Gekitō Ninja Taisen! was the first entry in the long-running Naruto fighting series, released during the early popularity of the anime. It features characters drawn from the opening story arcs, including Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Sakura Haruno, and Kakashi Hatake, competing in one-on-one battles across locations inspired by the television series.

The gameplay takes place mostly on a 2D plane while using three-dimensional character models and environments. Each fighter possesses unique attacks, chakra-based special techniques, throws, and combo strings that reflect their abilities in the anime. Movement is intentionally simple, making it easy to perform basic attacks while still allowing experienced players to chain together longer combinations and defensive maneuvers. Several single-player modes, local multiplayer options, unlockable characters, and a shop system that rewards continued play provide additional replay value beyond straightforward versus matches.

The game’s cel-shaded graphics impressively recreate the appearance of the television series, and the use of the original Japanese voice cast captures the personalities of the characters. Later entries would dramatically expand the roster and introduce more complex mechanics, however this original game established the foundation for the entire series with a much simplier structure like many of the anime-based titles of this era. It was an important early anime fighting game and a solid adaptation of Masashi Kishimoto’s popular manga and anime franchise.
