Description
From TV Animation: ONE PIECE Treasure Battle! revolves around a tournament organised by reporter Rocky Hattari, who invites the Straw Hat Pirates and many of their rivals to compete for a legendary Treasure Card said to grant any wish. Playable characters include Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, Nami, Sanji, Tony Tony Chopper, Portgas D. Ace, Smoker, Crocodile, Buggy, and numerous other characters from the early Grand Line storyline.
The game’s primary mode, Treasure Battle, plays similarly to a capture-the-flag contest. Teams of two fight over a treasure chest, attempting to carry it to their designated goal area and defend it until their ship arrives. Characters can attack opponents, throw the treasure between teammates, and use unique abilities based on their strengths from the series. There are numerous other multiplayer events including Battle Royale, Cross Country races, Teamwork Rally challenges, Kung Fu Survival, Pirate Soccer, and Treasure Hunt, making the game feel closer to a party game than a traditional fighter.
The cel-shaded graphics and extensive voice acting nicely recreates the personality of the anime, giving immersion into the One Piece world. Unlockable characters, stages, cards, and bonus content provide longevity, especially multiplayer sessions. While the controls and game balance are relatively simple compared to dedicated fighting games, the variety of modes and chaotic team-based action make it one of the more distinctive anime party games on the GameCube, particularly for One Piece fans.
