Stereo AV Cable

The official composite video with stereo audio cable for Super Nintendo/Super Famicom, Nintendo 64 and Nintendo GameCube systems.

Description

The Stereo AV Cable provided composite video in addition to stereo audio through three ‘RCA’ plugs. This was the most common way to connect external devices to a TV display in the 1990s. Although it was significantly better and more convenient than prior RF modulators and switches that hooked into TV antenna input, the quality remained compromised. Alternatives certainly existed, RGB was common in some markets (Japan and Europe) and uncompromising, while s-video was common elsewhere with limited image quality loss.  However, during this era there was only very niche consumer interest and understanding in image quality. Maybe it is hard to imagine the pre-HDMI era today.

This cable is specifically branded for PAL systems, however compatible with all setups. Although sold separately through Nintendo directly, it was widely distributed with consoles.
