Super Mario RPG

スーパーマリオRPG

The first RPG in the Mario franchise, combining Square’s turn‑based combat traditions with Mario’s platforming identity. A pre-cursor to the Paper Mario series.

Description

Super Mario RPG (Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars) presents an isometric 3D environment where Mario and his allies explore towns, forests, rivers, and dungeons. Unlike traditional JRPGs of the time, Super Mario RPG avoids random encounters: enemies are visible on the field, and battles begin only when Mario makes contact. Combat is turn‑based, with a party of up to three characters, and introduces “Action Commands,” a timing mechanic that allows players to press buttons at the right moment to increase damage or reduce incoming attacks. This system adds interactivity to battles, blending Square’s RPG conventions with Mario’s action roots.

The story follows Mario, Princess Toadstool (Peach), Bowser, and new characters Mallow and Geno as they attempt to defeat the Smithy Gang, who have shattered the wish‑granting Star Road. The narrative balances humor and whimsy with moments of drama, situating the game as both a continuation of Mario’s world and a distinct RPG experience. The game expanded the Mario universe with the inclusion of original characters like Geno, a puppet possessed by a celestial spirit, and Mallow, a cloud who believes he is a frog.

Contemporary reception praised the game’s graphics, humour, and accessibility. Its 3D‑rendered visuals were cutting-edge and visually appealing on the SNES. The collaboration between Nintendo and Square was a landmark partnership, bringing together two of the most influential forces in Japanese gaming. The design was intentionally less complex than Square’s Final Fantasy titles, to maintain a broad appeal. Retrospectively Super Mario RPG was foundational work, directly inspired later series such as Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi, which retained mechanics like Action Commands and humorous storytelling. The game blend of RPG depth and Mario’s playful identity make it memorable and a turning point for Mario titles. A remake for the Nintendo Switch introduced updated graphics and cinematics while preserving the original’s mechanics and narrative.
