Wing Commander: The Secret Missions

A story‑driven space‑combat campaign that follows a fighter pilot through a series of increasingly dangerous missions against an enemy empire. The narrative centres on tracking down a devastating new superweapon, with tightly structured sorties that escalate in difficulty.

Description

Wing Commander: The Secret Missions reworks the original 1990 PC expansion into a stand‑alone cartridge release, presenting its campaign as a self‑contained story rather than an add‑on. While the material originated as the first mission disk for the MS‑DOS Wing Commander, the SNES edition integrates the expansion’s narrative, mission flow, and ship roster into a single package tailored to the console’s controls and audiovisual style.

The story follows the TCS Tiger’s Claw as it responds to the destruction of the Goddard Colony by a new Kilrathi superweapon mounted on the Sivar‑class dreadnought, sending the player deep into enemy territory on a retaliatory pursuit. The campaign remains linear, emphasising escalating combat intensity across a sequence of tightly structured missions that build toward the destruction of the Sivar.

On SNES, the game adapts the original’s cockpit‑based space combat to the controller, simplifying some interface elements while preserving the core dogfighting rhythm of the series. The cartridge includes the expansion’s full mission set, its new Kilrathi capital ship, and its higher difficulty curve, but presents them with revised menus, a new introduction, and console‑specific presentation touches. Players can begin with a fresh pilot rather than importing one from the PC version, giving the SNES release a more self‑contained identity.

Over time, this edition has been remembered as a distinctive reinterpretation of the expansion, offering console players a complete, narrative‑driven Wing Commander experience built from what was originally a PC add‑on.
