SimCity

シムシティー

The first console adaptation of Will Wright’s city‑building simulation, that introduced several unique features not present in the PC original. It’s the fourth first party developed game on the system.

Description

SimCity was developed by Nintendo EAD under license from Maxis, and it became one of the launch titles for the Super Famicom. The game retains the core mechanics of SimCity: players zone land for residential, commercial, and industrial use, manage taxation, build infrastructure such as roads, railways, and power plants, and respond to disasters. However, Nintendo’s involvement brought distinctive changes. The most visible is the inclusion of Dr. Wright, a cartoonish adviser based on Will Wright himself, who provides updates on city growth and alerts about problems. Advisors would later become quite common in the genre.

The Super Famicom edition also introduced introduce several other changes. Special buildings that unlock as the city reaches certain milestones such as a Mayor’s House, amusement parks, casinos, and banks. These add progression incentives beyond the original’s sandbox design. Nintendo‑themed Easter eggs included Bowser replacing the Godzilla‑like monster disaster from the PC release, rampaging through the player’s city when triggered. Players can also unlock a Mario statue once their city reaches a certain population threshold, reinforcing Nintendo’s brand identity within the simulation. Further, localisation saw building designs re‑styled to resemble Japanese city architecture.

Reception was very positive: the Super Famicom edition sold nearly two million copies worldwide, far surpassing the original PC release. It helped establish SimCity as a mainstream franchise. It was praised its accessibility, the charm of Dr. Wright, and the balance between strategy and entertainment. It also played an educational role, introducing many console players to concepts of urban planning, resource management, and civic responsibility.
