High Speed HDMI Cable
A Nintendo branded HDMI cable for the Wii U, Switch, and classic Nintendo mini consoles. These are rated for HDMI 1.4 supporting 1080p60 output.
Description
Both the Nintendo Switch and Wii U ship with official high‑speed HDMI cables. The Nintendo Wii U was Nintendo’s first console to adopt HDMI as its standard output. Every Wii U unit included a Nintendo‑branded High Speed HDMI Cable (WUP‑008), about 1.5 metres long. This cable supported up to 1080p resolution at 60Hz, which matched the Wii U’s maximum output. Nintendo also allowed the Wii U to use legacy AV cables via its multi‑out port, but HDMI was the default for modern displays.
The Nintendo Switch continued with the same HDMI standard. The launch model also shipped with the WUP‑008 cable, identical to the Wii U’s, capable of 1080p at 60Hz when docked. With the Switch OLED model, Nintendo introduced a slightly revised HDMI cable (HEG‑005), which was more flexible and built to higher quality standards. The OLED dock itself added an HDMI 2.0 port, but the console still outputs at 1080p, so the newer cable’s higher bandwidth isn’t fully utilised.
In practice, both consoles could rely on standard high‑speed HDMI 1.4 cables, meaning any modern HDMI cable will work. Nintendo’s official cables are branded and sized for convenience, but they don’t offer unique technical advantages. The Switch 2 console would similarly adopt a HDMI 2.1 cable but effectively operate within HDMI 2.0 specs.
