Eye Shade

アイシェード

A detachable soft fabric visor that sealed the gap between the Virtual Boy console and the user’s face, blocking ambient light.

Description

The Virtual Boy Eye Shade was a critical part of the Virtual Boy console, designed to block external light and enhance immersion in the system’s stereoscopic 3D visuals. It is essentially a soft, fabric‑covered foam visor that attached around the front of the headset, creating a seal between the player’s face and the console.

Functionally, the eye shade served two purposes. First, it prevents ambient light from leaking into the display area, which is important for VR headsets. The Virtual Boy uses a red LED arrays reflected through oscillating mirrors to create its 3D effect. Any outside light could diminish the illusion. Second, it provides comfort by cushioning the player’s face against the hard plastic of the headset, making extended play sessions more tolerable.

The shade was removable and replaceable, secured by a series of clips around the headset’s frame. Over time, many original units suffered from wear, with the foam degrading or the fabric fraying, making intact eye shades relatively rare among surviving consoles. Nintendo did sell replacements at retail (VUE-A-ES(JPN)), at least in Japan, although due to the short-lived nature of the console, they are not found abundantly.

Although the eye shade was a necessity to all headsets, including the much later PSVR and PSVR2, the part was emblematic of the Virtual Boy’s unusual design that was nearly confronting to the market. The result was a system that never resonated with the wider market.
