Metal Slug Anthology
メタルスラッグコンプリートA compilation of arcade run and gun shooters built around fast reflex combat and cooperative play, presented as a home console anthology that preserves a distinct arcade lineage
Description
Metal Slug Anthology brings together seven entries from SNK’s long running arcade series, centred on side scrolling action that emphasises precise shooting, pattern recognition, and moment to moment improvisation. Players take control of soldiers from the Peregrine Falcon Squad as they battle enemy forces, aliens, and mechanised units across hand drawn environments. The tone balances exaggerated cartoon violence with military parody, reinforced by expressive animation and slapstick detail that remains consistent across the included titles.
Gameplay remains faithful to the original arcade releases, with tight movement, limited lives, and weapon pickups that alter fire patterns and crowd control. The anthology includes Metal Slug 1 through to 6, including Metal Slug X, allowing players to experience the mechanical evolution of the series in sequence. Technically, all are emulating their respective NEO•GEO releases, beside Metal Slug 6 which emulates the original arcade title. Local cooperative play supports two players, preserving the social design of the arcade originals. Compared with other platforms, the Wii edition prioritises accessibility and shared play. It maps shooting and movement to traditional controls, including GameCube controller support, with optional motion input for aiming, though core play is rooted in button based precision rather than gesture. Visual presentation retains the original sprite artwork and animations, displayed with minimal filtering to preserve arcade clarity. Menus and presentation frame the collection as a museum style package, including gallery material and adjustable difficulty options that accommodate both casual play and arcade accurate challenge.
Reviews praised the volume of content and the preservation of arcade mechanics, while criticism focused on uneven emulation performance and load times between games. Some reviewers also noted that motion controls felt unnecessary for a genre built on precision. Retrospective discussion positions Metal Slug Anthology as a convenient and affordable way to access the series’ core entries, remembered for consolidating SNK’s arcade legacy on modern mainstream consoles and for sustaining cooperative play well beyond the arcade era.
