Martian Panic
A light‑gun style rail shooter sees everyday 1950s archetypes defending Earth from a comic‑book Martian invasion, combining retro Americana settings with arcade shooting mechanics.
Description
Martian Panic is structured as an on‑rails shooter, focusing on aiming and firing using the Wii Remote as a light gun. Up to four players can play co‑op, each with their own Wii Remote, making it a party‑oriented experience. The story unfolds across eight themed levels, ranging from a classic diner and a drive‑in movie theatre to the Great Pyramids of Giza, all presented in a deliberately pulpy, comic‑book style.
Players choose from six exaggerated characters types: farmer, boy, housewife, jazz player, salesman, and cheerleader. There is also an arsenal of six weapons: a basic pistol, a scatter gun, laser blaster, lightning gun, grenade launcher, and an experimental laser. Difficulty is divided into three tiers and completing stages unlocks subsequent levels. Progress also opens up gallery content such as concept art, 3D models, and cutscenes.
Thematically, Martian Panic leans heavily into 1950s science‑fiction tropes, with flying saucers, ray guns, and exaggerated alien designs. The narrative premise is that a Martian mothership is draining energy from Earth’s core, and the player characters must repel the invasion before the planet is destroyed. The tone is intentionally campy, with humour and caricatured dialogue reinforcing the retro aesthetic.
While the comic‑book presentation and B‑movie premise had charm, the execution is shallow, with repetitive gameplay, dated visuals, and imprecise controls. Nevertheless, it was one of the Wii’s many budget‑priced rail shooters, aimed at families and casual players who enjoyed the novelty of pointing the Wii Remote like an arcade light gun. Retrospectively it’s not worth a revisit, failing to achieve the polish or staying power of its inspirations.
