Description

Super Mario 3D World combines traditional 2D platforming with 3D exploration. You control Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad as they embark on a colourful adventure to rescue the Sprixie Princesses from the clutches of Bowser. It is the sequel to Super Mario 3D Land. The game features a variety of levels with different themes and challenges, including traditional platforming levels, puzzle-focused stages, and boss battles. Players can choose to tackle the levels cooperatively with up to four players or play solo. The tone is bright and playful, reinforced by varied settings such as snowfields, deserts, and floating islands, each incorporating interactive objects and environmental puzzles.

Gameplay introduces multi-character selection, with Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad offering distinct abilities that affect speed, jump height, and reach. Levels feature layered paths, hidden collectables, and timed challenges, encouraging replay and experimentation. Cooperative multiplayer supports up to four players locally, combining collaborative and competitive dynamics as participants share space while vying for points. Power-ups such as the Super Bell enable climbing and wall-scaling, expanding verticality and movement options. The Wii U GamePad provides map and inventory access, though core play remains on the main display. The visual design employs a clean, high-colour aesthetic with dynamic camera shifts to frame action and reveal secrets. At release it received praise for its inventive level design, polished presentation, and multiplayer appeal, though some noted occasional camera limitations in crowded play. Retrospectively it is one of the standout titles in the Wii U catalogue, with its balance of classic platforming and modern design, bridging the series’ 2D and 3D traditions. The game has subsequently been re-released on the Switch in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury.
