New Super Mario Bros. U
New スーパーマリオブラザーズ UA 2D platform adventure built around cooperative play, precision movement, and layered level design, designed with accessible mechanics and a focus on momentum, rhythm, and exploration.
Description
New Super Mario Bros. U returns to the side‑scrolling structure of the classic series, presenting world map containing themed regions such as Acorn Plains, Sparkling Waters, Frosted Glacier, and Meringue Clouds. Mario, Luigi, and two Toads set out to rescue Princess Peach after Bowser forcibly occupies her castle, scattering his Koopalings across the surrounding lands. The tone is bright and playful, with each course introducing a new twist: moving platforms, environmental hazards, secret routes, and rhythm‑based obstacles. The games maintains the clean readability and tight control that define the 2D Mario lineage.
Gameplay emphasises character handling and course mastery, with players running, jumping, wall‑kicking, and gliding through levels that hide Star Coins, alternate exits, and challenge rooms. Up to four players can cooperate locally, sharing space while navigating hazards that encourage both teamwork and light competition. The introduction of the Super Acorn power‑up transforms Mario into Flying Squirrel Mario, enabling controlled gliding and vertical bursts that expand traversal options. Baby Yoshis add further abilities such as floating, illumination, or bubble‑blowing, while the Wii U GamePad’s Boost Mode allows an additional player to place platforms and interact with the environment to assist others. The visual design uses crisp HD artwork and smooth animation, with subtle dynamic camera pans and layered backgrounds that highlight course structure and hidden paths. Music blends new compositions with familiar motifs, using rhythmic cues to reinforce enemy patterns and environmental timing.
At release, the game was praised for its polished level design, responsive controls, and strong cooperative play, though some critics noted its adherence to the established New Super Mario Bros. formula. Retrospectively, it is regarded as one of the standout 2D entries of the modern era, balancing classic platforming with refined mechanics and a broad, interconnected world. The game was later expanded with New Super Luigi U and re‑released on the Switch as New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.
