A globally focused football simulation that retools EA’s established FIFA formula around the Wii U’s GamePad, using second-screen tactics, touch controls, and off-TV play to distinguish itself from the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. In PAL territories, including Australia, this edition was released simply as FIFA 13.
Description
FIFA 13 on Wii U presents the same broadly international football package that defined the series at the time, featuring 30 licensed leagues, 500+ clubs, and more than 15,000 players, while arriving as one of the Wii U’s launch title in PAL markets. Its main long-form single-player structure remains Career Mode, where players guide either a footballer or an entire club through league campaigns, transfers, and squad-building decisions, all framed through the commercial and competitive pressures of modern professional football. It offers a high-definition FIFA experience on a Nintendo console again, after years in which Nintendo-hosted entries have drifted away from parity with EA’s core console versions.
The Wii U version’s defining features are tied to the GamePad, which allows players to manage substitutions, formations, and tactical instructions in real time while also supporting touch passing, shooting, and drag-based player direction. These platform-specific ideas gave the game a unique interface layer, but the overall package was still widely judged to be closer to FIFA 12 than the PS3/Xbox 360 version of FIFA 13. Critics generally liked the core football and the GamePad’s management utility, but noted the absence of Ultimate Team, EA SPORTS Football Club, and several of FIFA 13’s headline gameplay additions. EA was quick to jump from the sinking Wii U ship, as this would be the only FIFA title on the platform. Nonetheless, an interesting and enjoyable launch-window adaptation of the massive global franchise.
