Splatoon
スプラトゥーンA team‑based third‑person shooter built around territory control, where players used ink both as a weapon and as a means of movement.
Description
Splatoon was introduced as Nintendo’s first original shooter franchise. The game introduced Inklings, characters able to shift between humanoid and squid forms. In humanoid form, they wielded ink‑based weaponry to cover arenas and splat opponents, while in squid form they could swim rapidly through their own coloured ink, replenishing ammunition and gaining mobility advantages.
The central mode, Turf War, pitted two teams of four against each other in three‑minute matches, with victory determined by which side covered the most ground in their ink. Ranked modes introduced alternative objectives such as Splat Zones, Tower Control, and Rainmaker, each demanding more tactical coordination. A single‑player campaign, Hero Mode, cast the player against the Octarians in a series of platforming and shooting challenges, while the local Battle Dojo offered one‑on‑one multiplayer.
Presentation was a major part of the game’s appeal. The visual style was vibrant and irreverent, with arenas resembling urban skate parks and shopping districts, while the soundtrack mixed rock, pop, and electronic elements to create a distinctive identity. The game also introduced Splatfests, limited‑time online events where players aligned with one of two teams and competed globally, reinforcing its community focus.
Reception was highly positive, with Nintendo being praised for its inventive take on the shooter genre, the balance between accessibility and depth, and the freshness of its aesthetic. Major criticism on the number of maps and modes at launch, as well as the absence of voice chat, were partly addressed through post‑release updates. The game sold over five million copies worldwide (the Wii U console sold less than fourteen million units), establishing Splatoon as a major new franchise for Nintendo and paving the way for sequels on the Switch.
