A music rhythm game that reimagines guitar performance through live‑action presentation and a redesigned controller. I acquired multiple of these at large retailer’s fire-sale of remaining Wii U inventory.

Description
Guitar Hero Live provides two distinct modes. The first, Guitar Hero Live, places players in first‑person perspective on stage, with full motion video crowds and bandmates reacting dynamically to performance quality. The second, Guitar Hero TV, streams a rotating library of music videos that players accompany in real time, functioning as a playable channel of curated tracks.
The Wii U version integrates the GamePad for menu navigation and second‑screen features, while gameplay itself remains focused on the guitar peripheral. The controller introduces a new two‑row, three‑button layout, replacing the traditional five coloured frets. This design emphasises chord shapes and finger positioning, demanding more nuanced input than earlier entries. Strum bar and tilt sensor functions remain, with Star Power activated through motion. The Wii U edition connects wirelessly via a USB dongle. The controller is identical to other platforms but pairs with a console‑specific receiver.
Contemporary reception in 2015 praised the innovation of the live‑action stage presentation and the breadth of the Guitar Hero TV library, but noted that the new controller created a steep learning curve for players accustomed to the older design. The Wii U version was judged technically competent, though its online features were constrained by the console’s smaller install base. Guitar Hero Live was the final major entry in the franchise, remembered for its bold reinvention and for the eventual shutdown of Guitar Hero TV’s servers in 2018. An experimental conclusion to the once widely popular rhythm game series.
