SCART RGB Cable
A generic Dreamcast SCART RGB cable that connects the Dreamcast’s A/V port to a television’s SCART input, delivering a true RGB signal for sharper, more vibrant video than composite or S‑Video.
Description
A generic Dreamcast SCART RGB cable plugs into the console’s proprietary A/V output and terminates in a 21‑pin SCART connector, the standard analogue interface on European televisions of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Unlike composite, which merges colour and brightness into a single channel, or S‑Video, which separates them into two, RGB transmits red, green, and blue channels independently, along with sync. This produces a markedly cleaner image with richer colours, sharper edges, and minimal visual artefacts.
The Dreamcast natively outputs RGB through its A/V port, which this cable simply exposes that capability. In practical use, a Dreamcast SCART RGB cable is ideal for connecting the console to a CRT television with a SCART input, where it delivers the console’s 480i and 240p modes with excellent clarity. On modern displays, SCART inputs are rare, so the cable is often paired with an upscaler or converter that accepts RGB SCART and outputs HDMI. While the Dreamcast’s VGA output is technically superior for 480p‑capable titles, RGB SCART remains the best analogue option for games that did not support VGA.
