Virtua Fighter 3tb (Repeat Edition)
バーチャファイター3tb リピート版HDR-0017 is the repeat version or reprint. This edition should come in a standard CD jewel case without the Project Berkeley (Shenmue) preview disc. Unfortunately what I have is the double sized HDR-0002 case with a Project Berkeley disc and a HDR-0017 disc in its wrong place. Effectively a loose disc and spare case & bonus disc.
Description
Virtua Fighter 3tb was Sega AM2’s update to the landmark arcade fighter Virtua Fighter 3, and it served as one of the most important showcase titles for the Dreamcast at its Japanese launch. The “tb” in the title stands for “Team Battle,” a new mode that allowed players to select a squad of three characters who would fight sequentially, much like the team format popularised by SNK’s King of Fighters series. This addition gave the game a fresh competitive edge while retaining the technical precision and realism that had defined the series since its inception.
The game introduced two new characters to the roster: Aoi Umenokoji, a practitioner of aiki‑jujutsu whose defensive counters added a unique rhythm to matches, and Taka‑Arashi, a sumo wrestler whose sheer size and weight altered the flow of combat in ways unseen in earlier entries. Alongside these newcomers, the returning cast benefited from the introduction of a dedicated “Dodge” button, which allowed fighters to sidestep into or out of the screen. This mechanic deepened the series’ commitment to three‑dimensional movement and strategy, setting it apart from other fighters of the era.
In Japan, Sega re‑issued certain Dreamcast titles under the Repeat Edition (リピート版) label. These were budget reprints of popular or important games, sold at a lower price point to keep them in circulation. The software itself was identical to the original release, but the packaging was simplified.
