Description
Dabitsuku: Daabii Uma wo Tsukurou! (Let’s Make a Derby Horse!) was a Japan-only horse-racing simulation, part of Sega’s broader Let’s Make (Tsukurou!) series. It places players in the role of a stable owner tasked with raising and managing racehorses across multiple seasons. The objective was to breed competitive thoroughbreds, train them effectively, and guide them to success on the track, balancing financial management with sporting ambition.
The simulation model combined several layers of management. Players selected bloodlines to breed foals, hired staff to oversee training and care, and scheduled horses for races of varying prestige. Performance on the track depended on both genetic potential and the quality of training regimens, with weather, track conditions, and jockey selection also influencing outcomes. Success in races generated prize money, which could be reinvested into facilities, breeding stock, and staff development, creating a cycle of growth and long‑term planning. Reception in Japan was positive among fans of the genre, due to the depth of the breeding and training systems.
Presentation employed 3D models for races, with commentary and camera angles designed to replicate the atmosphere of Japanese horse racing broadcasts. Menus and management screens were text‑heavy, reflecting the game’s simulation focus, while the Dreamcast hardware allowed for smoother animation and more detailed horse models compared to earlier entries in the series. It was never released outside Japan, limiting its international recognition, though it established a foundation for later entries such as Derby Tsuku 3 on the GameCube and PlayStation 2.
