Stereo AV Cable
ステレオAVケーブルOriginal Stereo AV cable for Sega Saturn. Came standard with most NTSC-J units but in the west the RF unit was provided.
Description
The Stereo AV Cable for the Sega Saturn is a standard audio-video connector designed to output composite video and stereo sound to compatible televisions. It came bundled with most NTSC-J Saturn units, whereas Western models often included RF adapters instead. It provides a significantly clearer AV output than RF connections making it a common but upgrade approach at the time, although those of us who were serious about audiovisual quality back in this era mostly jumped on s-video or RGB alternatives.
The Sega Saturn’s rear output is a proprietary multi‑AV connector that consolidates video and audio signals into one single interface. It is engineered to output composite video, stereo audio, s‑video, and RGB signals. The signal sent to the display depends on the cable attached, allowing the console to adapt to different regional display technologies and user preferences. It was one of the last consoles to use a mini-DIN style plug, similar to the Mega Drive. However, it was mechanically incompatible with its predecessor and added s-video support.
The Saturn’s Stereo AV Cable provided a base level of audiovisual quality with the broadest contemporary compatibility.
