Racing Controller
レーシングコントローラーThe official steering wheel shaped controller for the Saturn, in a revised colour for the Japanese domestic market.
Description
The Racing Controller was Sega’s official wheel for the Saturn. It was released in two distinct versions: a grey model and this white model, both designed specifically for racing games to provide analogue steering input.
The controller was shaped like a small steering wheel, with grips on either side and analogue triggers to simulate acceleration and braking. It was intended to enhance the experience of titles such as Daytona USA, Sega Rally Championship, and Virtua Racing. Unlike the standard Saturn pad, which relied on digital inputs, the racing controller offered smoother, more precise control, closer to an arcade cabinet feel. The controller also has a mini-DIN port which in theory could expand them with racing pedals.
In Japan, Sega produced two colour variations. The first was a grey model (HSS-0115), released early in the Saturn’s life cycle, matching the aesthetic of the launch hardware. It carried the same design cues as the original grey Saturn console and controllers, with a subdued industrial look. Later, Sega introduced this white model, which aligned with the redesigned “Model 2” Saturn hardware that adopted a lighter colour scheme. Both colours are functionally identical. In the west the controller came only in black, which I previously also had.
Wheels are increasingly hard to find since the they were never as widely distributed and their associated cost. Yet they really are highly important to the early racing games in this generation. The granular turning of the wheel compared to the hard left or hard right of the d-pad is night and day different experience. In the long run gamepads would include analog sticks (the Saturn 3D Pad, the Nintendo 64 Controller etc.) but for the earlier Saturn period, plenty of titles became arcade‑style experiences at home with this controller.
