An action game based on the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam anime, featuring stage-based mecha combat and narrative sequences drawn from the series’ early arc.
Description
Kidō Senshi Z-Gundam: Zenpen Zeta no Kodou is rooted in the Zeta Gundam storyline, covering the first arc of the anime’s second Universal Century series. A Saturn exclusive. Gameplay unfolds across cinematic mission stages that blend third-person mobile suit combat with dramatic cutscenes and stylised interludes.
Players pilot the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II and other suits across orbital and terrestrial skirmishes, with auto-lock targeting and projectile management forming the backbone of engagement. Visuals are bold for the time, incorporating anime-inspired framing alongside more functional HUD layouts.
While action remains on-rails and moderately paced, the game relies heavily on presentation to evoke narrative tension — targeting fans familiar with Char Aznable, Kamille Bidan, and the shifting allegiances of the Gryps conflict. As a Japan-only release, it fits neatly into Bandai’s mid-90s push for segmented console adaptations that tackled specific arcs rather than spanning entire series. This one prioritises spectacle and storyline over granular mech handling, serving more as a playable anthology than a full tactical simulation.
