Airs Adventure

エアーズアドベンチャー

A RPG that attempted to bring cinematic storytelling and 3D presentation to an early generation of disc‑based consoles, possibly more ambitious than it could execute.

Description

Airs Adventure was released exclusively for the Sega Saturn and follows the story of a young man, often referred to as Henry, who is framed for a crime and spared execution only through the intervention of a princess. From there, the narrative unfolds as a traditional fantasy quest, with Henry travelling across towns, dungeons, and battlefields to uncover conspiracies and prove his innocence.

The game employed a mix of 3D exploration and turn‑based combat, with character models moving across polygonal environments that were ambitious for the time but technically rough. Its design drew inspiration from other JRPGs of the mid‑1990s, echoing the structure of titles like Beyond the Beyond or Vandal Hearts, though with a more experimental approach to presentation.

The game’s visual style and pacing reflected the Saturn’s transitional era, where developers were still grappling with 3D hardware. Cutscenes attempted to deliver a cinematic flair, but the execution was uneven, with stiff animation and limited voice work. Compared to contemporaries such as Panzer Dragoon Saga or Albert Odyssey, Airs Adventure lacked polish and depth, though it shared their interest in pushing the Saturn’s RPG catalogue beyond simple 2D sprites.

It was poorly received because of its clumsy controls, awkward graphics, and underdeveloped mechanics, which left it overshadowed by stronger RPGs on the Saturn and competing platforms. Its obscurity outside Japan has also contributed to its reputation as a curiosity rather than a cornerstone of the system’s library.
