A unique fantasy raising simulation adventure hybrid that focuses on managing the schedules and relationships of a 4-character party to navigate a world of magic and reach one of its many distinct endings.
Description
Eternal Melody follows the story of a young man who, after a unfortunate freak accident at a construction site, is transported to an unfamiliar fantasy world. To return home, he must find a legendary magic that grants any wish. The experience is heavily focused on character management and is structurally similar to the developer’s other well-known title, Yūkyū Gensōkyoku.
The gameplay contains a core loop of schedule management and team building rather than traditional RPG exploration. You assemble a team of four companions from a total roster of 12 characters, which include both romantic interests and rivals. The main thrust of the game involves managing their daily schedules to improve their specific abilities and deepen their relationship with the protagonist. This social simulation aspect leads to a high degree of replayability, with more than two dozen possible endings based on your decisions. The gameplay features occasional combat during travel, though the outcome is determined by your party’s statistics, rather than direct player control. It uses the Saturn’s internal clock for certain time-based events and showcasing detailed character portraits during the frequent dialogue segments. The atmosphere is defined by its bright aesthetic and its focus on the interpersonal dynamics between the cast members.
At the time of its release, Eternal Melody was noted for its departure from standard RPG tropes in favour of a more simulation-heavy approach. Critics’ reviews were neutral to slightly positive, earning as low as 20/40 from Famitsu. Retrospectively, Japanese audiences were far more favourable, with appreciation for the quality of the character designs and the depth of the schedule-management systems. It reflects a period when developers were experimenting with hybrid genres that blended life-simulation with fantasy storytelling that became increasingly popular.
