Extension Cable

Generic extension cables to connect peripherals to the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles. These were commonly sold loose, in bulk.

Description

These Controller Extension Cables extend the reach of wired PlayStation and PlayStation 2 peripherals through Sony’s proprietary controller connector. The original PlayStation controller interface is based on a custom serial communication protocol that evolved through several generations, from the basic digital controller to the DualShock and DualShock 2 models. This protocol supports not only standard button inputs, but also analog stick data, pressure-sensitive buttons (on PS2), vibration feedback, and peripheral accessories such as memory cards.

Communication between the controller and console occurs over a bidirectional serial interface. The PlayStation connector uses 9 pins, carrying lines for data, command, attention, clock, power, and ground, among others. The console serves as the master device, polling the controller at regular intervals by sending command packets and receiving response packets that contain the state of all buttons and analog axes. Later DualShock models expanded on the protocol to include additional data for vibration motors and analog pressure sensing, while maintaining backward compatibility with earlier controllers.

Physically, the PlayStation controller cable ends in a rectangular proprietary plug designed to ensure a secure connection and consistent signal integrity. While the electrical signalling and protocol are relatively simple compared to modern USB-based gamepads, they are highly optimised for low-latency communication between the console and controller.

At the time, controller extension cables were a handy accessory to have, especially in larger living spaces. Today, various modern wireless adapters and Bluetooth interfaces offer a more convenient alternative, but these cables can still be useful if your console is positioned out of easy reach and you want to place a wireless receiver or controller adapter in a more accessible location.
