Ore no Shikabane o Koete Yuke

おれしかばねえてゆけ

A unique lineage RPG defined by its Ukiyo-e aesthetic and a mechanical focus on managing a cursed clan’s generational growth. It subverts traditional RPG structures by replacing permanent protagonists with a cycle of mortality and divine procreation, resulting in a deeply thematic and strategic experience.

Description

Ore no Shikabane o Koete Yuke (Over My Dead Body) is a highly distinct RPG that deviates from the cinematic, character-driven trends set by its contemporaries. The title is defined by its striking visual direction, utilising a traditional Ukiyo-e art style that gives the environments and monsters the appearance of living Japanese woodblock prints. This aesthetic choice, combined with a focus on procedural lineage management over static protagonists, established the game as a unique cultural departure from the standard fantasy tropes that dominated the late 90s RPG market.

The narrative is centred on a tragic curse placed upon a prominent clan by the demon Shuten Douji. This dual curse restricts the lifespan of every clan member to a maximum of two years and prevents them from procreating with other humans. To survive and seek revenge, the clan must perform the “Rite of Divine Union,” interbreeding with various Shinto-inspired deities to pass down their traits and techniques to the next generation. The story focuses on the collective struggle of a bloodline across decades, examining themes of mortality, the burden of heritage, and the cycle of sacrifice required to overcome a seemingly insurmountable evil.

Gameplay is split between menu-based clan management and turn-based dungeon crawling. Players must carefully manage their family tree, deciding which members should go into battle and which should focus on producing heirs with higher-tier gods to improve the clan’s genetic parameters. In the dungeons, time is a constant pressure; a ticking clock represents the passing months, and as characters age, their physical stats eventually decline before they inevitably die. This creates a high-stakes mechanical loop where every action must be weighed against the limited lifespan of the characters, requiring players to master the inheritance system to ensure each new generation is stronger than the last.

The game’s impact led to a technically overhauled PSP remake in 2011, which added new gods and refined the art style, followed by a direct sequel on the PlayStation Vita titled Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines. These later releases brought the franchise to a wider audience, maintaining the core “bloodline RPG” mechanics that made the original a standout title on the PlayStation, solidifying the series’ identity as a premier example of how Japanese folklore can be integrated into complex strategy systems, offering a level of thematic depth that remains rare in the genre.
