A sim racing game that expanded massively on its predecessor with nearly 650 licensed cars, 27 tracks, and a dual‑disc structure separating Arcade and Simulation modes. It became one of the best‑selling racing games of its generation and cemented the franchise’s reputation for realism and depth.
Description
Gran Turismo 2 was the sequel to the groundbreaking Gran Turismo and represented a huge leap in scope. The game shipped on two discs: Arcade Mode allowed immediate access to cars and tracks for quick play, while Simulation Mode (also called Gran Turismo Mode) offered a career‑style progression system where players earned licenses, bought cars, and entered championships.
The depth of the car roster was unprecedented for its time, spanning everyday compacts, rally cars, touring cars, and exotic supercars from Japanese, European, and American manufacturers. Rally racing was introduced as a new discipline, with dirt tracks and off‑road handling physics broadening the series’ scope. The track list included both real‑world circuits, such as Laguna Seca, and fictional favourites like Trial Mountain and Grand Valley.
Gameplay refinements improved handling, braking, and tuning depth, while the presentation retained the series’ mix of simulation authenticity and accessible design. Although the graphics engine was similar to the first game, the sheer scale of content was the defining feature.
Commercially, Gran Turismo 2 was a major success, selling over nine million copies worldwide. Praised its depth and variety, though some noted bugs and inaccuracies in car models. In retrospect, a landmark racing title that bridged casual and hardcore audiences, setting the template for the franchise’s encyclopaedic approach to car culture.
