A surreal hybrid of survival horror and educational typing game, where words replace bullets in the fight against zombies. It reflects the playful collision of utility and absurdity, turning literacy into a weapon of survival.
Description
The Typing of the Dead: Zombie Panic is a home port of the bizarre arcade mash-up of rail-shooter and typing tutor. The supports USB keyboards (including Sega’s own available in a bundle) alongside Smilebit’s reworked House of the Dead 2 engine. Instead of blasting zombies with light guns, you dispatch them by accurately typing words and phrases that floated above their heads.
The PlayStation edition presents a faithful Arcade mode in additition to an Original mode. It also added PC-born minigames, time-attack boss rushes, and a two-player Doubles challenge. The one difference is it swapps Dreamcasts for pastel PS2 backpacks. Mostly unheard of outside of Japan, the premise alone unsurprisingly lead Zombie Panic to find a cult niche. Sega’s slick execution of another arcade experience seals as worthwhile of a play.
