Description

UFC 2009 Undisputed is a mixed martial arts fighting game developed by Yuke’s and the first UFC‑licensed title since 2004’s UFC: Sudden Impact. It was the debut entry in THQ’s new multi‑year agreement with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The game aimed to capture the intensity and authenticity of the sport, featuring a large roster of real UFC fighters across multiple weight classes, each with accurately modelled appearances, signature moves, and fighting styles.

Gameplay is built around a blend of striking and grappling, with six primary disciplines represented: Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu, Judo, and Wrestling. Each fighter combines one striking style with one grappling style, influencing their strengths in stand‑up exchanges or ground fighting. The control system uses the right stick for clinch and submission transitions, while face buttons handle strikes and kicks, and triggers modify attacks or block. Career mode allows players to create a custom fighter, train to improve stats, and compete through multiple seasons to earn title shots. Exhibition matches, online multiplayer, and unlockable bonus characters, including members of the TapouT crew, add to the replay value.

The presentation mirrors UFC broadcasts, with commentary from Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg, authentic arenas like the Octagon, and licensed entrance music. While praised for its depth and realism, the game also became known for its steep learning curve, especially in mastering the ground game and submission mechanics. Its success led directly to the sequel, UFC Undisputed 2010, released the following year.
