An action platform game built around destructible environments and a transforming protagonist partly as a technical showcase for the PlayStation 4.
Description
Knack is a relic‑based creature that assists humanity against goblin forces and other threats. The narrative follows the discovery of ancient relics that power Knack’s body, allowing him to grow in size and strength as he absorbs more fragments. The story loosely explores invention and conflict through the contrast between human technology and the primal energy of the relics.
The mechanics combine combat, platforming, and environmental destruction. You control Knack, who can shift from a small form to a towering figure by collecting relics scattered through levels. Combat involves punches, kicks, and special moves powered by sunstones, while platforming sections require precise jumps and navigation of hazards. The game includes a quite basic but quite effective cooperative play, with a second player controlling a smaller version of Knack, resulting in an ideal couch co-op title.
Knack had quite a mixed response. It was developed partly as a technical showcase, particularly the particle effects used in Knack’s transformations. The visual presentation was impressive at the console’s launch, alongside Killzone: Shadow Fall in demonstrating the console’s capabilities. Yet many found it repetitive and lacking mechanical depth. The differing opinions reflect differences of expectations. While some appreciated the simple, consistent mechanics that were almost nostalgic of the classical genre, others expected revolutionary gameplay that matched the visuals. Seeing Knack for what it is, a visually modern classical linear 3D platformer, it was a modest but solid title. As a couch co-op experience it filled a gap which at the time had been increasingly forgotten by developers, casual couch co-operative play. Possibly most enjoyable with a friend. Knack II would expanded the combat system and add more robust cooperative features, continuing the story.
