Radial-G Racing Revolved

A virtual‑reality anti‑gravity racer built around tubular tracks and extreme speed. One of the earliest titles to fully embrace VR’s potential for racing despite its limited content.

Description

Radial‑G: Racing Revolved is a futuristic anti‑gravity racing game initially for Oculus Rift before being ported for PlayStation VR. Built in Unity, it was conceived as one of the earliest racing titles designed specifically for virtual reality, aiming to deliver a heightened sense of speed and immersion that traditional flat‑screen racers could not replicate. Development began with a Kickstarter campaign in 2014 that fell short of its funding goal, but community enthusiasm encouraged the team to continue. An early access version appeared on Steam in late 2014, leading to the full release in 2016.

The game includes nine tracks and seven unlockable ships, with both single‑player races against artificial intelligence and online multiplayer for up to sixteen participants. The presentation leans heavily on neon‑lit environments and a pulsing electronic soundtrack, chosen to maintain clarity and rhythm at extreme speeds. It’s central innovation lies in its tubular tracks, which allow full three‑hundred‑and‑sixty‑degree rotation. Players pilot sleek racing craft along twisting circuits filled with loops, inverted tunnels, jumps, and split paths. The sensation of disorientation and verticality is amplified in VR, where cockpit view and head‑tracking place the player directly inside the ship. The design encourages constant adjustment of racing lines, as green gates provide speed boosts while red gates slow the craft. Later updates introduced combat racing, adding weapons to disrupt opponents and intensify the competition.f

The game’s sense of speed was an effective showcase for VR technology. The tubular track design distinguished it from other futuristic racers, though it could be repetitious and lead to motion sickness. Nonetheless Radial‑G: Racing Revolved was a solid title for early adopters of virtual reality, particularly embracing the medium’s potential for racing.
