Concrete Genie
A magical realist adventure that transforms a decaying seaside town into a living canvas, blending painting, exploration, and personal storytelling.
Description
Concrete Genie follows Ash, a bullied teenager who discovers a magical paintbrush capable of bringing his drawings to life. Set in the abandoned port town of Denska, once thriving but now consumed by pollution and darkness, the game tasks players with restoring colour and vitality to its streets. Using the DualShock 4’s motion controls, players paint landscapes, symbols, and fantastical creatures called Genies onto walls. These creations are not merely decorative: their personalities and abilities vary depending on how they are painted, and they help Ash solve environmental puzzles, clear obstacles, and push back the encroaching Darkness.
The experience is structured as a semi‑open world, with neighbourhoods gradually unlocked as Ash recovers pages from his torn sketchbook. While bullies roam the streets and must be avoided, the focus is less on combat and more on expression and problem‑solving. Later sections introduce confrontations with corrupted “Dark Genies,” where Ash uses elemental powers such as fire, wind, and electricity to pacify them. The game also includes a VR mode, allowing players to paint in a more immersive format. Compared to contemporaries like Journey or Okami, Concrete Genie distinguishes itself through its tactile painting mechanic and its emphasis on art as a restorative force.
Despite being short and limited in challenge, Concrete Genie stands as a distinctive, emotionally resonant title, full of visual charm, heartfelt themes, and the sheer satisfaction of painting life back into a ruined city. It was the final work of Pixelopus before the studio’s closure in 2023.
