Description
Tobidase! Trap Chiki Hanamichi Douchuuki (featured as a primary mode in Fate/tiger colosseum Upper) reimagines the classic Japanese card game Koi-Koi within the irreverent, comedic universe of the Fate series. The experience centres on a series of Hanafuda matches where players compete against a massive roster of characters to navigate a “trouble-filled” journey. The narrative is defined by its light-hearted parody of the franchise’s usually somber themes, utilising original rules and the introduction of “Noble Phantasm” (Hougu) abilities to trigger massive tactical reversals during a match.
The core mechanics adhere to traditional Hanafuda rules, where players match floral cards from their hand to a central pool to create scoring combinations (Yaku). However, the simulation distinguishes itself through the “Hougu” system, allowing characters to deploy unique supernatural skills that can disrupt an opponent’s strategy or boost the player’s own point total mid-round. The game supported two-player Ad-Hoc wireless battles, allowing for competitive local play.
Reception among the fanbase was highly positive, particularly for the high-quality voice acting and the surprisingly deep implementation of the card mechanics. Critics noted that while the game functioned as a comedic spin-off, the strategic layer provided by the character abilities added a refreshing twist to the centuries-old card game. The visual presentation maintains the bright, “chibi” art style of the Tiger Colosseum series, creating a cohesive aesthetic that prioritises personality and humour. A standout example of how traditional Japanese culture can be effectively blended with modern media properties.
