From TV animation ONEPIECE グランドバトル スワンコロシアム

A fighting game based on One Piece, condensing the console Grand Battle! mechanics into 2D sprite‑based combat, featuring a roster of early Straw Hat crew members and Arabasta villains, and offering both story and tournament modes

Description

Grand Battle Swan Colosseum was designed as a portable counterpart to the PlayStation’s Grand Battle! series. Due to the handheld’s limitations, the game abandoned the 3D arenas of its console predecessors in favour of entirely 2D sprite‑based characters and environments. Despite this, it retained the series’ trademark chaotic arena combat, with players able to run, jump, block, throw items, and unleash special attacks.

The roster included thirteen playable characters, covering the Straw Hat crew up through the Arabasta arc alongside allies and enemies. Each character had around ten standard techniques plus one or more finishing moves, powered by a three‑tiered “Bombstock” gauge that filled as attacks landed. Stages were themed around Arabasta locations, and items played a major role in combat. Status items temporarily boosted attack, defence, or agility, while throwable items inflicted damage or status effects such as unconsciousness. The game modes included Event Battle, which loosely followed the Arabasta storyline, and Grand Battle, a tournament ladder culminating in boss fights.

Presentation leaned into a chibi‑style aesthetic, with exaggerated sprites and colourful backgrounds that suited the WonderSwan Color’s screen. Each character had two costumes — their standard outfit and a recoloured variant. The soundtrack and effects were simple but energetic, reinforcing the lighthearted tone of the series. As a WonderSwan Color exclusive, the game never left Japan, but it became a curiosity among fans of both One Piece and Bandai’s handheld library. It is notable as the only Grand Battle! entry to appear on a handheld and the only one to use fully 2D graphics. While limited compared to its PlayStation counterparts, it captured the humour and energy of One Piece’s early arcs and remains a distinctive entry in the franchise’s long history of licensed games.
