Amiga 500

A home computer built to deliver accessible 16‑bit performance, multimedia capability, and a broad library of games and applications.

Description

The Amiga 500 presents the same core architecture as the earlier Amiga 1000 but in a cheaper, more compact case designed for the mass market. It uses the Motorola 68000 processor alongside custom chips for graphics and sound, enabling advanced animation, colour depth, and sampled audio compared with contemporaries. The system was sold with a keyboard integrated into the main unit, with external drives and peripherals attached as needed.

Software on the Amiga 500 ranges from productivity tools to a wide variety of games. Titles such as Shadow of the Beast, Lemmings, and The Secret of Monkey Island showcase its graphical and audio strengths, while applications like Deluxe Paint became standard for digital art. The machine supports multitasking under the AmigaOS, and its chipset allows smooth scrolling, sprite handling, and stereo sound that distinguished it from rivals such as the Atari ST and IBM PC compatibles.

At release the Amiga 500 was praised for bringing high‑end multimedia capability to a wider audience at a lower price than the Amiga 2000. It became the most popular model in the Amiga line, particularly in Europe, where it was a leading home computer through the late 1980s and early 1990s. Retrospectively, it is remembered as a landmark system for both creative software and gaming, valued for its technical strengths and for the breadth of its library. It remains closely associated with the rise of home computing as a platform for both play and production.
