A first‑person shooter built to return the series to its World War II roots with a cinematic campaign and traditional multiplayer.
Description
Call of Duty: WWII is the 2017 release as part of the long‑running Call of Duty franchise. The single‑player campaign follows Private Ronald “Red” Daniels of the U.S. 1st Infantry Division, charting the Allied advance from the D‑Day landings in Normandy through to the liberation of Paris and the push into Germany. The story emphasises squad camaraderie, historical battles, and a more grounded tone compared with the futuristic settings of preceding entries which had received criticism.
The gameplay reintroduces “boots‑on‑the‑ground” combat, removing advanced movement systems like jetpacks and wall‑running. Multiplayer featured classic modes alongside new additions such as War Mode, which presented objective‑based scenarios with shifting battlefronts. The game also included a cooperative Nazi Zombies mode, offering a horror‑themed survival experience with its own storyline.
Upon release the game was praised the campaign’s set‑piece battles and the series return to a historical setting, despite leaning heavily on familiar tropes. Multiplayer was well‑received for its balance and map design, while Nazi Zombies gained attention for its atmosphere and cooperative depth. Retrospectively, Call of Duty: WWII was a deliberate pivot back to the franchise’s origins, appealing to players who wanted a more traditional Call of Duty experience after years of futuristic experimentation.
