Tobii Eye Tracker 4C

A consumer USB IR camera and emitter-based eye and head tracking hardware. Unlike its predecessor, the tracking processing is done onboard and it uses a simplified USB 2.0 interface. Marketed primarily for Windows gaming in a select number of PC titles and Windows Hello biometric authentication.

Description

The Tobii Eye Tracker 4C is a PC peripheral that combines eye and head tracking to enhance gaming, streaming, and user interaction. It is notable for being the first consumer eye tracker to support simultaneous head tracking alongside gaze detection. The device attaches to the bottom of a monitor and connects via USB. It uses infrared sensors and Tobii’s proprietary EyeChip ASIC to process gaze data on device, reducing CPU load compared with earlier models.

Although a relatively niche device, it has received moderate levels of third party developer support in gaming, integrated with over 150 titles, offering features such as extended view (camera pans where you look), aim assistance, and immersion effects. These include a wide range of AAA titles from Ubisoft, such as Far Cry 5, to indie titles such as Aragami. The inbuilt software also provided a feature for streamers, allowing a visual indicator showing viewers exactly where the player’s eyes are focused.

Beyond gaming, the 4C supports Windows Hello for secure facial recognition login and gaze‑based interactions within Windows 10 and 11. It also provides analytical insights for esports training, allowing players to review eye movement patterns to refine decision‑making. Importantly, Tobii distinguishes between “interactive use” (gaming, streaming, everyday PC control) and “analytical use” (research or professional eye‑tracking studies), with the latter requiring separate licensing. Tobii make a range of rather expensive for equipment for eye tracking studies, orders of magnitude more expensive than this device. Ask me how I know.

The device was novel and functional, combining eye and head tracking, with praise for immersion in compatible games. However, its utility depended heavily on developer support, and outside of gaming its everyday applications were limited. Retrospectively, the 4C brought eye tracking into mainstream consumer hardware, paving the way for later Tobii devices, although the overall position of the devices remains niche.
