Game Disc
A child-raising simulation that substantially expands the original game’s domestic planning, character development, and role-playing systems. The PC Engine Super CD-ROM² edition combines detailed schedule management with voiced scenes, animated presentation, wilderness expeditions, and a vast range of possible futures.
Description
Princess Maker 2 places the player in the role of a retired hero entrusted with a ten-year-old girl sent from the heavens. Her celestial guardian remains connected to her life, but responsibility for the next eight years belongs to the player, whose chosen name, occupation, and relationship with the girl shape the household around her. Her birth date determines her zodiac sign and starting characteristics, while later decisions influence her health, temperament, morality, reputation, relationships, and prospects. She may enter adulthood as royalty, a military leader, a scholar, an artist, an ordinary worker, or something altogether darker.
Each month is divided into three scheduled periods assigned to education, employment, rest, holidays, or adventure. Schools develop combat, magic, science, etiquette, theology, dance, art, and other skills, while part-time jobs provide income and alter her statistics according to the work performed. Players must balance tuition, wages, equipment, health, stress, morality, and reputation, with excessive pressure causing illness or rebellious behaviour. Annual festivals offer cooking, dancing, art, and combat competitions, while wilderness expeditions allow the daughter to explore, find treasure, meet unusual characters, and fight monsters using equipped weapons and armour. Her accumulated fighter, magical, social, domestic, and artistic reputations determine her eventual occupation, while separate relationship conditions influence whether and whom she marries.
Building upon the original Princess Maker, the sequel turns the rigid statistical routine into a richer simulation of personality and independence. The daughter reacts more visibly to stress, morality, clothing, seasonal events, and her relationship with the player, while adventure areas provide a more substantial role-playing component than the original’s limited expeditions. The PC Engine version adapts the computer design to Super CD-ROM² hardware, using character portraits, music, voiced dialogue, and console-friendly menus to give its long campaign a stronger dramatic presence. Later versions appeared on systems including the 3DO, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, Windows, and modern platforms, but the PC Engine edition remains one of the game’s important early console interpretations.
Contemporary players praised its remarkable freedom, detailed scheduling, expressive character art, and the way small decisions accumulated into markedly different lives. Retrospectively it was the defining entry in the raising simulation genre, with its numerous occupational and marriage combinations giving it exceptional replay value and long-term influence. The PC Engine release is especially valued as an ambitious Japanese CD title that joins life management, fantasy role-playing, and domestic responsibility in one sustained campaign.
