Mickey Mouse II

ミッキーマウスII

A Game Boy action-puzzle game where Mickey explores a castle-like maze, gathering keys, avoiding enemies, and using limited weapons to clear a path forward.

Description

Mickey Mouse II is closer to a maze-puzzle platformer than a normal side-scrolling action game. Each stage requires the player to collect keys to open the exit while avoiding enemies that patrol the level, with occasional weapons such as arrows or bombs used to remove threats. The game had an unusually complicated international localisation, being reskinned as The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle 2 in North America and later reworked again in Europe as Hugo. This Japanese Mickey version tells the story of Mickey rescuing Minnie from the Horned King, while the Bugs Bunny version changes the cast to Looney Tunes characters and has Bugs rescuing Honey Bunny from Witch Hazel. Europe later received another reskin as Hugo, based on the Danish troll character, with additional changes such as Super Game Boy support and altered audio/presentation details.

For a platformer, the emphasis is more on route planning, enemy avoidance, and clearing maze-like rooms than on fast jumping or reflex-heavy action. It contains 28 regular levels plus a final boss stage, with each level requiring Mickey to gather the necessary keys before the exit can be opened. Enemies patrol the stages and usually need to be avoided rather than fought directly, though occasional weapons such as arrows or bombs allow Mickey to defeat specific threats when used carefully. Progress is built around small, self-contained puzzle rooms, and it features a password save system.

As a Mickey Mouse title, it is less of a traditional Disney platform adventure and more of a licensed maze-puzzle game using Disney characters and castle rescue framing. Its appeal comes from simple stage-by-stage problem solving, compact Game Boy design, and the challenge of navigating enemy-filled rooms with limited resources.
