Sonic Advance

ソニック アドバンス

The first Sonic the Hedgehog title released on a Nintendo console, featuring four playable characters Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, in a fast‑paced quest to stop Dr. Eggman’s latest plan.

Description

Sonic Advance marked a historic moment: Sega’s flagship mascot debuting on a Nintendo handheld after the company’s exit from the console hardware market. Co‑developed by Sonic Team and Dimps, the game blends the classic 2D gameplay of the Mega Drive era with the updated character designs and move sets introduced during the Dreamcast era in Sonic Adventure.

The game features four of Sonic’s most recognisable characters: Sonic, the fastest top speed, signature Spin Dash and homing attack; Tails who can fly short distances, useful for reaching hidden areas; Knuckles who can glide and climb walls, offering alternate routes; and Amy who slower but uses a hammer for attacks.

The adventure spans seven themed Zones, each with two Acts and a boss battle against Dr. Eggman. Levels feature multiple paths, loops, springs, and hazards, encouraging replay to find faster routes or hidden items. Special Stages, accessed via giant rings, challenge players to collect all seven Chaos Emeralds — required to unlock the true final battle and ending.

The game featured multiplayer modes via GBA Link Cable, including races and ring‑collection challenges. Further, the game included Tiny Chao Garden, a virtual pet mode where players raise Chaos, feed them, and transfer them to the GameCube’s Sonic Adventure 2: Battle or Sonic Adventure DX via the GBA–GameCube link cable.

The game was well‑received for its faithful yet fresh take on 2D Sonic, vibrant visuals, and smooth controls, though some critics noted its relatively short length. It sold strongly, becoming one of the GBA’s best‑selling platformers, and spawned two sequels: Sonic Advance 2 (2002) and Sonic Advance 3 (2004).
