A modern reimagining of the classic Game & Watch system in a Mario theme.
Description
The Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. was released for the 35th anniversary edition of the Super Mario brand. Although it shares the form of the original Game & Watch units, it is a modern take on them with contemporary hardware. It primarily contains the original Super Mario Bros., a Famicom title that postdates the Game & Watch introduction by several years.
The device’s software includes:
- Super Mario Bros. (1985, NES)
- Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (1986, Famicom Disk System)
- Mario version of the original Game & Watch game Ball
- Mario themed digital clock
The era and design of the games are ideally suited for such a device. The inclusion of a digital clock means although it is a novelty product, it has some ongoing functionality. The unit operates with a modern colour LCD screen and is charged with USB-C.
When released, Nintendo had been on a bit of a roll with the Classic Mini console series. Due to the time this momentarily became in quite high demand although it was not limited in terms of production. There was companion product, Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda, which although less popular, was arguably the better with a wider selection of games included. Both are truly nostalgic products with some thoughtfully designed elements.
