Licensed street-style headphones by Hori with Nintendo DS branding that was released along the Japanese DS launch.
Description
Hori’s Headphone DS was released in Japan as part of the company’s line of officially licensed Nintendo DS peripherals. The design was deliberately compact: two standalone ear pieces with hooks, strongly reminiscent of the late-90s Sony street style design. They were compact to fit into a carrying case alongside the DS itself.
Connection was through a standard 3.5 mm stereo plug, making it compatible not only with the DS but also with other portable devices of the time such as early MP3 players. Visually, the accessory carried the understated Hori aesthetic — clean lines, a neutral colour scheme, and somewhat subtle branding. Unlike bulkier gaming headsets, it was intended for portability and casual use, aligning with the DS’s identity as a handheld system for play on the go.
Although they provided convenience and an improvement over the DS’s speakers, the sound quality was quite average. Its main appeal lay in being an officially licensed, well‑built option that matched the DS hardware in size and style.
