Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2

ドラゴンクエストモンスターズ ジョーカー2

A monster‑collecting RPG that expands its series’ formula with larger battle parties, new monster sizes, and a stronger emphasis on competitive play, while retaining the exploratory spirit of its predecessors.

Description

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 begins with the player character stowing away on an airship bound for the Monster Scout Challenge, only for the vessel to crash on a mysterious island. From there, the protagonist must locate survivors, uncover the island’s secrets, and build a team of monsters to survive. The game features over 300 recruitable creatures drawn from across the Dragon Quest series, including both returning favourites and new additions. Battles are turn‑based, with up to three monsters active at once, and players can either issue direct commands or rely on AI tactics. A key innovation is the introduction of monster sizes: large monsters occupy two party slots, while gargantuan monsters take up an entire team bench, adding a new layer of strategy to team composition.

The game refines the monster-taming formula with streamlined exploration, more tactical depth, and a breezier progression curve than its predecessor. Set aboard a wrecked airship on a remote island, the game centres on recruiting, battling, and synthesising monsters drawn from across the Dragon Quest mythos. Encounters lean into quick, turn-based skirmishes, with party synergy and fusion mechanics offering flexible team-building. While the narrative remains light, the creature designs and battle systems carry enough variation to sustain long play sessions. It’s one of the more polished handheld entries, benefiting from its late DS release timing and expanded online support.
