Description

Eternal Darkness ~13 Cursed People~, known as Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem internationally, follows Alexandra Roivas investigating her grandfather’s murder in the present day as she uncovers the Tome of Eternal Darkness, which transports her into the lives of twelve other characters — Roman centurions, monks, dancers, scholars, soldiers — each of whom is “invited” into the struggle against the Ancients. Reading the tome transports players into the lives of these thirteen cursed individuals. Each character experiences the corrupting influence of the Ancients, and their stories interlock to reveal humanity’s long struggle against these Lovecraftian forces.

Characters include a Roman centurion in 26 BC, a Frankish messenger in 814 AD who slowly decomposes after opening a cursed scroll, Ellia, a temple dancer in 1150 AD who is sacrificed to the Ancients, Karim, a Persian swordsman in 565 AD who becomes bound to the tome. Other figures include Paul Luther, a Franciscan monk in 1485 AD who uncovers heresy within a cathedral; Roberto Bianchi, an architect in 1460 AD forced to design a tower for forbidden rituals; Peter Jacob, a war reporter in 1916 AD who documents horrors beneath a French battlefield; and Edward Roivas, Alexandra’s grandfather, who in the 20th century becomes one of the tome’s custodians before his murder. Together, these thirteen cursed individuals form a tragic anthology, each drawn into the struggle against the Ancients and each meeting a fate shaped by corruption, sacrifice, or madness. The Japanese subtitle emphasises this ensemble structure, presenting the narrative as a tapestry of doomed lives, whereas the Western subtitle, Sanity’s Requiem, foregrounds the psychological horror and the “sanity effects” that distort the player’s perception, breaking the fourth wall with hallucinations, false system errors, and warped visuals.

The game went through a long and troubled development cycle. The project began at Silicon Knights in the late 1990s as a Nintendo 64 title. Early builds were shown publicly in 1999, but the scope of the game with its thirteen playable characters across different eras, complex sanity system, and cinematic ambitions, all proved too demanding for the N64 hardware. Development stalled, and Nintendo and Silicon Knights shifted the project to the GameCube, which offered the power needed to realise the vision. Despite the unusually long development period, the final release was critically well received. Eternal Darkness received praise for its ambitious storytelling and unsettling atmosphere, though it struggled commercially compared to Nintendo’s more mainstream GameCube titles. In retrospect the game is less a psychological thriller and more as a tragic anthology of doomed lives.
