Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II Modem Adaptor Set

ファンタシースターオンライン エピソード1&2 モデムアダプタセット

A Japan‑only GameCube bundle that packaged the game with Nintendo’s official 56k Modem Adapter (DOL‑011), allowing players to connect their GameCube to a phone line and access Sega’s online servers.

Description

When Phantasy Star Online launched on the Nintendo GameCube, it was the first titles to make use of the console’s optional network hardware. Unlike the Dreamcast, which had a modem built in, the GameCube required a separate peripheral.

Nintendo produced both a 56k dial‑up Modem Adaptor (DOL‑011) for standard phone line connections and a Fast Ethernet Broadband Adaptor (DOL‑015) for CATV and similar connections, although this was less common than ISDN in Japan at the time. The modem slotted into the GameCube’s high‑speed serial port on the underside of the console, and once installed, it allowed the game to dial Sega’s servers.

When the game first launched only the modem was available, the network adaptor would follow later the same year. So upon launch, the Modem Adaptor Set bundled the game with the DOL‑011 modem, ensuring you had everything needed to play online.

Functionally, the modem adapter was limited to 56k speeds, which constrained performance but was sufficient for PSO’s relatively lightweight data exchanges. The broadband adapter was technically superior, but it was sold separately and supported by fewer titles – Mario Kart and Kirby’s Airride supported LAN play via the ethernet adaptor.

From a historical standpoint, the Modem Adaptor Set is notable because it represents Nintendo’s first real step into modern online console gaming. While the servers for the official Japanese release have long since been shut down, the hardware remains compatible with fan‑run private servers.
